I've been reading Meghan Gurdon's reviews of children's books in the Wall Street Journal for many years. Her review of the last Harry Potter book in the series several years ago convinced me that I needed to get off the sidelines and read the entire series--but I digress (already!).I think most everyone recognizes that reading aloud to children is inherently valuable and good, but Ms. Gurdon spends much of the book explaining why this is so--citing numerous studies and telling many personal tales of her own experiences with her children and other children she met while researching and writing the book. Some things I had not realized before reading this book: babies are positively impacted in their development by parents and grandparents (and others) reading aloud to them even from picture books; children who are read to regularly (as opposed to quite so much time on devices) are generally more well-behaved; and reading aloud--and being read to--is valuable in all sorts of way--for our entire lives.I posted a recommendation of this book on my Facebook page, and one person commented that she had been a first grade teacher for 20 years, that "read aloud time" was one of highlights of the day both for her and for her students, but that there were many children in her classes over the years who had never been read to before they got to her class. The final chapter has some excellent practical suggestions for how reading aloud can become an integral part of the lives of young families (as well as older adults), and how significant the advances in vocabulary and changes in behavior in young children can be traced, in part as least, to parents reading aloud to their children. Deciding to read aloud to each other is quite counter-cultural, and those who decide to take it up will have to decide to turn off their "devices" for some time each day, but the rewards that come from reading aloud are so great, it's hardly worth even thinking of "powering down" the phones and tablets as a sacrifice!

This is an exceptionally well written and researched book on the importance of reading to young children. She combines the most recent research with her own personal experiences of reading to her children. She lays out exactly the problem parents face today with the "screens" that are distracting children off all ages. The studies using an MRI are especially compelling. If you are a parent (grandparent, uncle,aunt,etc..) read this book. You will be compelled to start reading (or do it more!) to your child. I love the list at the back of suggested books to read to children of all ages. I'm afraid that when my grown children visit again, I'm going to read something aloud to them!!!

The Enchanted Hour is an insightful and encouraging book for anyone who has a child in his/her life. With a perfect combination of her personal experience and professional research, Megan Gurdon’s beautifully written book illustrates the benefits of reading to all children. As a school librarian and mom, I am fascinated with children’s books and devoted to reading aloud. What a thrill to read this enlightening book!

Reading aloud to our kids is a magical gift. This book is a great exploration of not only the parent/child connection it forges, but also shows you the value of reading aloud "from nursery to nursing home." It's a swift, enjoyable read that wraps up with practical tips and book lists. What's not to love??

With a writing style as warm and inviting as a conversation with a friend over coffee, Meghan Gurdon hits the nail on the head of the impact that shared reading and subsequent language acquisition has on cognitive development. As both an Early Educator of several years and an avid reader, I can not recommend this book enough!

Oral storytelling has been around since the beginning of time. Reading aloud to children is not only a great bonding experience but has many physical, emotional and mental benefits. In this book by a Wall Street Journal's children's book reviewer and essayist, there’s finally scientific evidence supporting the theory of reading aloud.Step by step, Meghan Cox Gurdon lays the foundation for reading with our children. It builds vocabulary, cognitive skills and makes both the reader and the listener healthier individuals. Reading aloud also takes away the isolation technology brings. Families are connected in ways devices just can’t compete with.Adults will find this a useful book, too. I remember when MR N and I first got engaged, we would take turns reading from a book before we went to sleep. It was a fun way to engage in intimacy without having to spend money.I’m a huge proponent to reading and try to spread my joy of reading to all who’ll listen. This book is a must read for anyone looking to improve their lives and the lives of their children. Highly recommend!Disclaimer: I received an ARC from Harper via Edelweiss in the hopes I’d review it.My Rating: 5 stars

I am a big proponent of reading aloud within families so when I saw this book, I thought it was a popular read-aloud revival book. Sadly, this book read like a self-help book with anecdotal-type information. I was disappointed by the format and then by the anti-screen rhetoric coupled with a story about an autistic-child's breakthrough using assisted communication (which is nonsense). I don't need science or non-scientific evidence to show how great reading aloud is- I was just disappointed by this book that seemed like it was trying to be something that it is not.
