In "L-Vis Lives," Kevin Coval does a great job of asserting his position as a hip hop/spoken word artist to be mentioned amongst the greats. He reminds the audience that talent comes in every color and that not all great MC's come from urban inner city areas. However, Coval uses race as the backdrop of the entire book and the subject of most of his poetry which allows the reader to get a glimpse of his struggle and pride as a white hip hop artist. The book is also great because it functions as a history lesson, in that he alludes to artist that have come before him such as Elvis, Eminem, The Beastie Boys and Vanilla Ice. Coval gains the trust of his readers by demonstrating his knowledge of the hip hop music industry and urban culture. I would definitely recommend this book of poetry to anyone who is interested in exploring the subject of race in music in general but especially in hip hop. Coval is conscience hip hop artist that can be compared to rapper like Nas and Common. The manner in which Coval discusses "touchy" subjects without being worried about his critics and skeptics makes him very deserving of respect in the hip hop industry! Once again, we are reminded of the unique talent that comes out of the Midwest! We did it again, Chicago! :) (suburbs count too)

LVis Lives by Kevin Coval is an amazingly intricate compilation of poetry that discusses many "taboo" subjects head on, without any hesitancy. His passion for writing, as well as the hip-hop world is clear. I thoroughly enjoyed both the literal and masked allusions to many prominent figures in popular culture including Vanilla Ice, Eminem, the Beastie Boys, and of course, the King. I would recommend this collection of poetry to anyone interested in understanding/interpreting racial and social identities within our world. Not only does Coval grasp the intricacies of hip-hop culture, but spins it on its head. The beats of hip-hop culture come alive in every phrase and word of each poem. They are all interconnected, culminating in a final section that focuses on a person so outside the box, that somehow still fits in with the other artists mentioned (you will have to read to find out!). Although the free style form can be a bit hard to grasp, searching the every other word allusions is unexpectedly exciting. Unlike anything I've ever read before. Tough, but if you're willing to put in the effort, it is a very rewarding, and eyeopening, read.

Coval transcends race and culture as he writes under the persona of a contemporary rap Elvis character. Discussing complicated ideas about gender, race, and identity in our modern society, he brings together the differences to address the new sub-culture of the "whiteboy." Modern ideas are tested and this is masterfully done so by creating this L-Vis character. I would suggest this book of poetry to those who are interested in rap culture. He makes many allusions to rap artists and racial issues that many have to face. I would also suggest this poetry book to those who are interested in the development of the white artist submerged in the "black art." Though the whiteboy may be a public enemy in his time, there is something about him that makes us wonder what more we could be.

Kevin Coval's L-vis Lives!: Racemusic Poems is definitely worth reading. It's ability to keep you turning through the pages, studying every line, and every word reveals an astonishing amount of subject matter that will resonate and strike your brain and heart. Coval uses the idea of L-Vis as a person going against what society expects and rising above (not in all cases) the negativity. With how much Coval brings to question in his book I guarantee you'll love every minute of it.
