As the son of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Fr. Benson gave a possibly disproportionate coverage to the Anglican denomination. Still, it is an illuminating read, from an excellent author.
Especially interesting from this late day - 100 years later.
Since England is the origin of much of the division of the 21st century church, this is a vital component of understanding.
This book is intended as a summary of ( as the title suggests) of various non-Catholic but ( in most cases) Christian churches. With the intent of pointing out particular ways a Catholic evangelist might find an inroad. Because it was written by an Englishman around the turn of the 20th century, you might expect it to be anachronistic. You would be wrong. Even though the bulk of the book deals specifically with various Anglican strains and spinoffs, parallels to almost any modern denomination are easily discerned. benson also displays amazing foresight in predicting where various traditions will end up in the future (that future is now). Whether you are polishing apologetic chops or just interested in the a thumbnail sketch of the major denominations' doctrine and history, you will get a lot out of this book.He is very charitable in his assessments but still points out flaws. Great balance and demonstration of speaking truth in love.
