About the Author

Never nominated for sainthood, the author has spent his life in the most "gawdawful" places with some of the most interesting people imaginable. "Making your own" often meant using local ingredients and improvising your equipment. This thirst induced ingenuity produced some amazing and sometimes hilarious results. The characters, recipes, plans and instructions in this book are real, only the names have been changed to protect the guilty. The war stories are all true and growing daily. An ex-Green Beret, Leon came to Alaska in 1973. Assigned to the U.S. Army Northern Warfare Training Center at Ft. Greely where he met his wife Scottie. The crew now includes a son, Leon Jr. studying for a degree in Computer Science and an incorrigible little green bird named Jessie who "punctuated" almost every page of the draft book.

This book focuses on the processes of making beer, wine or moonshine. It does give the reader a very good insight as to what equipment is needed to make your stuff, but you will still have to do your research on the internet to find what technology exists for what you want to make. A very small number of recipes of liqueurs at the back, but this book is not about recipes, it's about basic equipment, procedures, and safety. Worth getting if you are just starting out!

I have had this well over a year now and have tried several recipes. I am very happy with this book. I am a man who usually prefers photos in a DIY book but this one is fine without them. There is way more information and recipes than I every thought. You really get the rundown of every liquor you can think of as a beginner. If you want a starter book or a comprehensive information book this can do you well. If you are super serious you might want to go beyond this book as there is limited information on some of the recipes and not always all the info you desire but much more than many other books. I think this should be in every home brewers library.

This book is quite "rough around the edges" but that does not take away its strength as the starting point to the world of making homemade booze. The book is more along the lines of learning the basics and making actual booze (beer, wine, alcohol and mead) than it is about making a world class Cabernet Sauvignon, or a Tequila that will stand up next to Don Julio 1942.If you drink your cocktails with your pinky finger extended, this is probably not the book for you. If you drink them from a mason jar, you have found your new favorite book!If you require thousands of dollars worth of equipment, hydrometers, stainless steel pots, and yeast flown in from Europe, then this is not your book. If you want to make wine or moonshine using pots in your kitchen and tools in your garage, this is the book for you.The book covers the basics in each category, wine making, mead, beer brewing and distilling. It gives hundreds of recipes to get you started. I am currently waiting for the dandelions to bloom so I can make a batch of dandelion wine. This is the first time in my life where I am actually hoping for plenty of dandelions on my lawn! I knew an old-timer many years ago that used to make his own wine and he used to make this great dandelion wine every spring. He passed away before I was smart enough to learn his secrets, hopefully this book will get me on the right track to figuring them out.The book covers the basics. For instance in the wine making section it shows you how to make wine from water, sugar and yeast. Actually it recommends you start there to learn about the yeast and sugar connection. Then it tells you to make two wines using grape juice and two different yeasts so you can get a handle on how different yeasts completely change the end result. Then it moves you on up to actually using grapes. Even if you plan on making world class wines, you really would benefit from knowing all these basics. In my opinion this is the place you should start if you are serious about making home made booze. I also think its a great book to get if you are one of the doomsday preppers out there. Or if you know someone that is, give them a copy of this book, I am sure they will appreciate it.

If you're looking for a practical guide to wine, beer and spirit making, this is the book. It contains useful basics presented with some humor. I was overwhelmed with all the highly detailed information and scientific jargon that I was getting from Brew Bibles and whatnot. I wanted something that didn't over-complicate what I was doing, and this was it. Despite its simplicity, it is a wealth of recipes and information!I use this book quite a bit. It's faster to grab this off the kitchen cookbook shelf than it is to Google a simple recipe for something. And I'm pretty good at Googling. It also covers things like....-- How to make a capper (different styles)-- How to make an airlock from household materials-- What to use that stupid crockpot for that is still in the box-- Malting basics-- Cheap and easy kegging-- Troubleshooting-- Why to have a Hydrometer and how to read it-- Pros & Cons for tools and gadgets-- yeasts-- Water types (basics, no long winded science by region)I suggest reading the contents pages that are shown online. It will give you a good idea of what is in the book, especially recipes. If you are planning on being a commercial brew master or are looking to produce for competitions, this will probably be to simplistic. If you're looking for something that won't confuse the crap out of you, cuz you just want to make some good 'ol home brew (wine, beer or spirits), and you don't want to walk into a retail store and be sold a boat load of crap that you could've made at home, this will be an amusing and informative book.

Just got this book this morning. Leafed through it, read the introduction. This is the kind of book I love. A real How-to book. Love the writer's philosophy: if humanity has been making alcohol for millennia then why are we now trying to overdo it. Keep it simple. I'm so sold on this book. It reads more like a novel then a technical manual.Purely by accident I opened it up on the page about water locks. Having spent some money on those items I now realise it was a waste of money. Simple and easy to make, right there in front of me, a page full of them. Home brewer for more than 20 years. Beer enthusiast for 40. Never even attempted to make beer from scratch. Just reading part of the chapter on home brewing makes me realize I have all I need but the malt to start making my own beer in my own kitchen. Won't be long now.Started making mead about a year ago. Had a brief look at that chapter as well and it gave me some interesting ideas to try out on my next batch. The back cover says "if you could buy only one 'make your own' book for the rest of your life, this is it." From what I have seen so far I have to agree 100%. All How-to books should be that well written.
